Three Decades of Government Relations

With nearly three decades of experience working on national issues, Tim Cansler has held multiple positions in government agencies and with the nation’s most prominent agricultural trade association, Farm Bureau at the county, state and national levels.

Tim CanslerBefore founding Cansler Consulting, Tim served in the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency. In this capacity, Tim advised the USDA Administrator on intricate farm policy and conservation decisions directly impacting 1.5 million farms and ranches throughout the U.S.

Tim was also closely involved in decisions to dismantle a decades-old farm policy that impacted a $2 billion industry by offering solutions including development of the supply chain, price discovery, transparency, warehousing and transportation.

USDA

Subsequently, Tim advised the Undersecretary of the USDA (Department of Agriculture) directly responsible for day-to-day operations of three federal agencies administering over $2.6 billion in Marketing and Regulatory Programs (MRP).

The Marketing and Regulatory Program promotes and expedites domestic and international trade of U.S. agricultural products. The Agencies of MRP actively participate in national and international bodies that structure a variety of industry standards. During his service, Tim made recommendations to cabinet-level officials on multiple, complex issues impacting trade disputes including Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (mad cow disease) and Avian influenza. Tim also offered a variety of solutions on multiple phytosanitary trade disputes and regulatory processes impacting biotechnology.

It is this experience that has afforded Tim to be successful in assisting a variety of clients as they pursue their policy, regulatory and legislative goals with Congressional Members, the White House and regulatory agencies. Cansler Consulting serves several industry sectors including food and agriculture, international trade, environment, healthcare, biotechnology, and transportation and infrastructure.

Education & Awards

  • Tim is a graduate of the University of Kentucky .
  • And a recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the College of Agriculture Alumni Association
  • He is also an alumnus of the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program, an intensive two-year international program designed for agricultural producers and agribusiness professionals who want to be on the "cutting edge" of decisions that affect agriculture, rural communities and society in the 21st century.
  • During his tenure at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Tim was recognized for his work as a recipient of the Administrator's Award for Policy Implementation of the 2002 Farm Bill.
  • More recently Tim received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Range Management.
