On Friday, September 25, Speaker of the U.S. House John Boehner (R-OH) stunned everyone in Washington with his resignation from Congress at the end of October. The news came as Republican leaders were deciding the appropriate legislative route to take to pass a federal spending and keeping the federal government operating while appeasing a small group of right-wing ideologues in their party.

After speaking with many of his House colleagues California’s Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) announced on Monday his bid to become the 54th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.  McCarthy is certain to obtain the necessary 218 votes from the republican caucus.

McCarthy was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2006.  He represents California’s 23rd district (Kern, Tulare, N. LA Counties) where agriculture, energy, and defense are the top industries.

In fact, the 23rd district of California is one of America’s top agricultural districts with over $3 billion annually in crops such as: cotton, citrus, grapes, stone fruits, pistachios, wine grapes, almonds, olives, tomatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, alfalfa, cattle and sheep. Kern County also produces nearly 10% of the nation’s oil supply, or about 560,000 barrels of oil per day.  It is also a leader in wind, solar, and geothermal energy production.

The 23rd district is home to Edwards Air Force Base, the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at China Lake, the Mojave Air & Space Port, and NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.
